BOB MARTIN/PRESIDENT’S AWARD for CONTRIBUTION TO THE CLUB
Bob Martin was a driving force behind the club through its early beginnings in the 1950’s and 60’s. A player who doubled as captain, coach, president and treasurer, Bob carried the club from its infancy through to its adolescence. A tireless worker, Bob’s love of the game and the people who played it, permitted the Barbarians to become a respected and successful organization. The Bob Martin award is presented to a club member who has made an outstanding contribution to the Barbarians in other than a playing capacity. After the move to Aurora in 2002 this award was combined with the President’s Award offered by the ARC and the winner is selected by the current club president.
DOUG HEATON AWARD for CONTRIBUTION TO THE CLUB
This award is named in memory of Douglas Heaton, the father of a former member of the club. Doug lived next door to Victoria Park Secondary School in Don Mills and made himself available to organize and help coach a variety of the school teams whether or not his children were active in the program. He made his home available to the Barbs on many occasions for get togethers after practices and games and for parties when a venue for a fund raiser was needed. He was a friend to the club and its members. The Doug Heaton Award is presented to a person, not necessarily a member of the club, who has made a valuable contribution to the Barbarians in a non-playing capacity.
JAMES GREEN AWARD for INSPIRATION
This award is given in memory of James Green, a dedicated member of the York County Rugby Club who was tragically injured while playing rugby. He left a lasting impression on this club mates for his perseverance and indomitable spirit. This award is given to a senior club player that has inspired others with their strength and courage and competitive spirt
NIGEL TOY AWARD for MOST IMPROVED PLAYER, Men’s Section
Nigel Toy coached the Barbarians through the 1970’s. Having moved to Canada from New Zealand in the early 1970’s, Nigel started a rugby program at Victoria Park Secondary School about the same time as he joined the Barbs as a player. Accomplished at fly-half, Nigel focused on an “open style” of play that has characterized our club over many years. His dual role as teacher/coach lead to rapid growth in the size of the club and the development of Canadian born first team players, another long-time characteristic of the Barbarians. This award is presented to the senior male player who has demonstrated a significant improvement in the skills associated with the game of rugby while playing for the club, in one year over the previous.

Leadership Award is presented to a club member who, always goes above the call of duty, even they are asked.
